Week 3: Stage 1 Brainstorming Session

Week 2: Choosing Media Artist and Malaysian Traditional Dance

Choosing Media Artist and Traditional Dance

--> Media Artist chosen is Gabriel Moreno.
--> Traditional Dance from Malaysia chosen is Mak Yong.

1-1   Media artist (explain & write)
- Why I choose the artist? Because of the style?

I choose Gabriel Moreno because of this three main reason:

i)                    his style of work
ii)                   his theme of work
iii)                 and his way of manipulating space and color

In most of his work, he uses woman as the main theme and he portrayed those woman in their own persona. He draw the woman in monotone color which he mainly uses black while her persona or personality are drawn in a cheerful color and lines. He also uses the space brilliantly as he would position the woman in the middle and also at the side of the canvas and that image of woman would occupy most of the space. The colorful lines would fill up other spaces and even on the inside of the woman as well. There is some empty spaces left in his work but it enhances the work more rather than making it felt empty.

- What about the artist work that you like most and WHY? Justify.
Justify in many sentences and NOT 1 word.

What I like the most about his work is that he use woman as his inspiration, he portrayed woman in a very creative way and he nailed it because most of the personality that he portrayed in his work are what woman is in real life, some are straightforwardly simple and easy but some are a mystery that you need to uncover. Secondly, I like the way he use his lines in his work. Soft, subtle and detailed.

2- 1 Traditional Dance from Malaysia
 - Why do you choose that dance

Because Makyong is unique. The way they move and put some stories in the dance-drama. Mak yong is considered the most authentic and representative of Malay performing arts because it is mostly untouched by external sources.

- What elements from the dance that you like the most? The Music is macho? The Costume? The Motion of the dance?

I like the movement of the dance. It’s really smooth movement. Besides, they will change the story in every performance and every storyline is different and has its own meaning. The story is really interesting because they have like background music and make us feel so curious what will happen in the next scene.

Madness - Artist Statement

Name: Norhafizah Binti Mohamad Noh

Artwork Title: Madness

Target Audience: Teenagers
Artist Statement:
Teenagers always dealt with emotional unbalance. This is the time that they just feel to be rebellious and wanted to try many new things. Some of the common feelings are “Madness”. It can be either madness of anger, love, anxiety and much more. And it would sometimes become bad if not solved rationally. Well, that’s the teenager’s madness.
The video I made, I wanted to catch the madness in attitude that someone especially teenagers can do in order to release out their emotion. It can be in various ways but most common is to smash down things and do some chaos. So in this video, I play around with bright color to represent young age. All the splattered color is to represent how imbalance emotion can be as well as the process of releasing it. But some actions, when you grow older, you just wish you can go back in time and change some of the things you’ve made.  For the poster, it’s a simple image that I edited to show the imbalance and madness feelings.
Artwork Treatment:
I capture the video using a digital camera. While all the color, I used normal water color because the color is vibrant and easy to tidy up after the shoot. Later, I edited the video in NCH Video Pad Editor. I arranged all the sequenced, adjust the timing; add up some text and lastly I include the background song for this video. For the sound, I edited it in NCH Wave Pad Editor. I cut some part of the song that I wanted to use, put in some fade in and out effect before using it in the video.
For the poster, I edited the color splatter using Adobe Photoshop brushes. Positioned it later on and lastly I add on the text as the title of the poster.

Modern & Classical - Artist Statement

Name: Norhafizah Binti Mohamad Noh
ID: 1111114962
Artwork Title: Modern vs Classical
Target Audience: Teenagers
Artist Statement:
Music has always brought big influence in a certain society. From one era to another, music always changed according to the development of the era it’s created. And today, music has improved a lot compared to the older days, no matter on the music styles as well as the musical instruments and also the moods each music genre gives to the listener. I believe that Music is a mirror of someone’s attitude.
Artwork Treatment:
I decided to use a famous musical instrument from two well-known genre in music which is Modern and Classical. The electric guitar would represent Modern music and the old violin would represent Classical music.
I enlarged the image which I edited on Adobe Illustrator first so that the image won’t be jagged when printed. After that, I added on some simple fonts enough to show the moods of the musical instruments. The electric guitar would have more strong and loud sound so I edited the font to be straightforward and attention-grabbing. While the violin having a more soothing and slow sound, so I edited the font to be harmony.
